Yeast is a fungus of which is referred to as Candida. Yeasts are commonly present in moist areas of the human body such as the mouth and the vagina. In fact, for healthy women, about 25%-35%, carry yeasts in their vaginas. That is why the most common vaginal infection in caused by yeast. This is referred to as Candidiasis. Though, there are other vaginal infections that are caused by different organisms such as protozoans, bacteria, etc.

Vaginal yeast infections are caused by the increase of the number of total yeasts introduced in the vaginal area relative to the number of total, for example, bacteria present in that specific area. These yeast infections that affect the vagina can also be caused by the introduction of new number of yeasts in the area.

Other causes of candidiasis are poor immune system and past records on inner vaginal injuries. Though can be possibly diagnosed as an early sign of HIV, vaginal yeast infection is not a sexually transmitted disease. However, one can feel itchy and have rashes on his penis after having a sexual intercourse with a woman infected with candidiasis.

Slightly watery, white discharge to a chunky one, much like of a cottage cheese, vaginal discharge is one of the primary symptoms of this infection. Painful urination and pain during intercourse are also the symptoms of vaginal yeast infection. Redness, swelling and itching of the vulva are the other signs.

Examination on the pelvis is done to diagnose this infection. Redness and swelling of the vulva, in the vagina or in the cervix are shown there. A sample of the vaginal discharge is examined and will show presence of yeast. There are prescribed creams and suppositories that are used to treat this infection. Though, you can buy and use it even without the prescription. Treating yourself at home is just fine if your symptoms are mild and you don’t have pelvic pains or fever or you are not pregnant. Visit your doctor if you have fevers, pelvic pains, you are pregnant and or the symptoms persist after applications of creams and or suppositories.

Though for some reasons, you don’t have to panic if you have these symptoms. Go to your doctor and know what to do and be cured. Panicking won’t help you be relieved from the illness, it may even worsen the situation.
